NAHUM AND MARTHA KING HOUSE

The Amos and Matilda King family were Oregon Trail pioneers, arriving in the Oregon Country around 1845 before coming to Portland around 1849. They operated a tannery along a creek that ran through the area now covered by Providence Park while also investing in land in and around the Portland area. Amos and Matilda’s son Nahum A. King started his working career in southern Oregon, raising the horses used to pull streetcars back in Portland. After returning to the city, he began managing the family’s real estate holdings in the area. In 1908, after years of financial success, he and his wife, Martha, built a new house on land the King family had originally platted at the northwest corner of Southwest Twentieth Avenue and Salmon Street.
